Smithfield Is Giving Away This Superbird Clone! Build Part 1. Everyone thought Richard Petty would forever stand alone as NASCAR’s only seven- time champion, but Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson somehow did the unthinkable by joining The King in the sport’s most elite fraternity. The cliché about never saying “never” certainly seems appropriate, but some records weren’t meant to be broken, like Richard Petty’s remarkable record of 2. To put that figure into perspective, consider that Jimmie Johnson led all drivers with five race wins in 2. The King. No professional racer on the face of the Earth has seen more checkered flags than Richard Petty, and what makes the feat even more mythical for race fans are all the awesome Mopars that helped The King charge to victory lane. To pay tribute to Richard Petty’s accomplishments, and celebrate the long line of Mopars that helped carry him to greatness, Smithfield Foods commissioned Petty’s Garage to build a retro- themed, Hemi- powered Pro Touring Superbird. Best of all, they’re giving it away to one lucky fan.
All you have to do is buy some pork! Slick Scheme. Shamelessly plugging sponsors is a NASCAR specialty, whether it’s drivers chugging a bottle of Coke—label facing camera—during the post- race interview, or making sure to name each and every sponsor during that same interview just two seconds after emerging from a pit road brawl. Folks, these are trained media professionals who know how to take care of their sponsors, but other than buying sticker space on the sheetmetal, how do sponsors really take care of them?
Likewise, how do sponsors take care of the fans? Fortunately, real- deal car guys work behind the scenes at Smithfield Foods, and they came up with the perfect solution during the 2. We wanted to make a statement, not just buy ads,” Bob Weber of Smithfield Foods proclaims.
A few years ago, we produced a documentary called Chasing 4. Richard Petty’s legacy.
We followed that up last year with another documentary, Building 4. Richard’s 1. 96. 7 season that saw him win 1. After those programs aired, Roger Penske came up to me at a race and said he wished NASCAR had more sponsors like Smithfield.”That’s not even the best part. Smithfield Foods built a replica of Petty’s 1. Hemi Belvedere and gave it away at Homestead- Miami following the last race of the 2. Following up such epic coolness is no small task, but the car guys at Smithfield concocted a scheme to one- up themselves yet again.
Going into 2. 01. Richard Petty would be making another cameo appearance in Disney’s upcoming Cars 3 movie by doing the voice for Strip ‘The King’ Weathers Superbird character. We then came up with the idea of having Petty’s Garage build a 1. Superbird to give away to an Albertsons grocery store customer,” Weber recalls. Building it Right.
Yeah, it’s not a real Superbird, but there’s good reason for that. We can’t give away a real Superbird because if someone wins it, they probably couldn’t afford to pay the tax on it!
Instead, we decided to build a Superbird clone from a Road Runner,” Weber reasons. Our mission statement is to build the ultimate grocery getter, a performance car with a Gen III Hemi and a five- speed automatic that your wife can drive to Albertsons. The car will look more like a Superbird than a real Superbird because the stance on the original cars never looked quite right. It will have all late- model gear, but look like Richard Petty’s original race car.”Having authentic car guys in high places at Smithfield isn’t just good for conceiving great ideas, it also ensures that this ’bird will be built to a much higher standard than the typical giveaway car. This is a highly visible project, and we want to build it the right way, not like a reality TV project.
That’s why we partnered with Petty’s Garage,” Weber explains. No one’s going to drive a real Superbird to the grocery store, but how about a tribute car built off a Road Runner, with a modern stance and a late- model Hemi? How cool is that?”Concept to Reality. Ultimately, while grandiose vision can provide great inspiration, the success of any project comes down to execution. Condense the timeframe down to a mere four months, and the challenge of building a high- end street machine from scratch increases substantially. Fortunately for Smithfield, leading the way at Petty’s Garage are former Cup car builders accustomed to getting racecars ready for competition between race weekends.
That level of battle- tested experience combined with a team of talented fabricators provides the perfect formula for success. Scooby-Doo! Wrestlemania Mystery Full Movie Online Free. And oh yeah, seven- time Cup champion driver, Richard Petty, and eight- time Cup champion crew chief, Dale Inman, can drop by at any time to make sure that the Superbird recreation looks as true to the original stock car as possible. To get the tires rolling, Petty’s Garage tracked down a solid 1.
Road Runner from a local seller in early December 2. The car was an old street racer, so it needed some bodywork, but overall it was a good, sound car. This build is very unique because we’re converting a two- door post Road Runner into a Superbird,” Russ Stellfox of Petty’s Garage explains. Post cars are much stronger structurally than coupes, so we thought it would be cool to build a Superbird clone off of a two- door post. It will be the only two- door post Superbird out there. We sandblasted it over Christmas, then decided to make some significant repairs with all- new AMD sheetmetal.”The tell- tale trip to the sandblaster revealed a rusted- out floor pan, trunk pan, quarter- panels, rockers, and framerails all in need of replacement. With a dedicated crew working nearly 1.
Petty’s Garage has already made great progress on the Superbird build. You’ll see it all, including the sheetmetal repair, Road Runner- to- Superbird conversion process, four- link suspension installation, Gen III Hemi retrofit, interior rehab, and all the final assembly right here in Mopar Muscle as a four- part series. Finally, we’ll cap it off with a full feature story on the finished masterpiece just as Smithfield’s Giveaway contest is officially rolled out to the public in the Fall. Eat Pork, Win Car! Just as cool as the giveaway car itself is how easy it is to enter to win. All you have to do is purchase three Smithfield pork products at any one of Albertson’s family of grocery stores (2,5. Smithfield. “For our Belvedere giveaway last year, we flew 1.
Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race of the season at Homestead- Miami Speedway,” Bob Weber of Smithfield Foods recounts. Each person went on stage with Richard Petty at Homestead, and received a key. If the key started the car, it was yours. We’ll probably do something similar this year.”To see last year’s Smithfield giveaway—Richard Petty’s third- gen Hemi- powered 1. Belvedere II NASCAR clone—click here!: http: //www. The Road Runner donor car rolled into the Petty’s Garage shop as an aborted project car that sat dormant for 1. The motor was long gone, but the Chrysler 8.
As the Petty’s Garage crew made quick work of the teardown, some wavy sections on the top of the quarter- panels created some cause for concern. While this caliber of bodywork will suffice for most street cars, it was deemed inadequate for the Smithfield build.
Inspecting the bottom of the floorboard on a lift only reveals part of the story. To prep the car for sandblasting, the entire interior was stripped down.
The seats, carpet, and dash were all in great condition. A trip to the sandblaster revealed a rotted floorboard, filler panel, decklid, and rear framerails. Large portions of body filler covered up past repairs as well. In addition to the big chunk of body filler on top of the quarter- panels, a coat of filler concealed poor welding along the seam prior to sandblasting. The weld was so weak, the panel broke off by hand. Both driver- and passenger- side quarters needed replacement with new AMD pieces. The filler panel between the trunklid and rear windshield had seen better days.
