Birmingham has some fantastic new and established traffic- free cycle routes in and around the city. Many of them are close to railway stations so you don’t even have to get out the car. Sustrans, the charity which created the National Cycle Network has teamed up with Birmingham Cycle Revolution to recommend these easy cycle rides, with plenty of café stops and exciting attractions to refuel in and warm up along the way. This short easy route starts close to the railway station so it’s an easy one to do without the car. Access the path via Vincent Drive and head west to California! You can carry on into Woodgate Valley, which is a great place to spot wildlife such as the marsh harrier or kingfisher, with pony trekking, an urban farm, and a visitor centre café. Start: Holloway, Ley Hill, close to Merritts Brook Lane. End: Bournville Park entrance on Linden Road opposite the Cadbury factory. Nearest station: Bournville – ½ mile on the far east side of Cadbury factory. Take a leisurely ride from the base of Ley Hill through attractive parkland including Manor Farm park and the world- famous Bournville estate.

This ride takes you alongside Birmingham’s largest river, the River Tame, over Perry Hall’s wide open playing fields and green spaces. A moat is the only remains of the Gough family home. The park has a small heronry, so pack a picnic and some warm clothes and settle down to watch the action. If you’re seeking more of an adrenalin rush the Birmingham BMX track is close by. Where: Brookvale Park and Witton Lakes. Distance: 2¼ miles one way. Start: Brookvale Park entrance, close to mini roundabout. End: Park Road, Erdington. Nearest stations: Gravelly Hill (½ mile from start), Erdington (⅓ mile from end)The long run of Bleak Hill Park now adds a useful link towards Erdington to the well- established North Birmingham Route alongside Witton Lakes and Brookvale Park’s boating pond.

There are tea and cake opportunities to keep you pedalling, with cafés on Slade Road at the start of the ride, and Brookvale café on Marsh Lane is just off the path between Brookvale and Witton Lakes.
